Child poverty in New York among worst in nation, report says

The report found that the cities — which ranked second, fifth and seventh in rates of child poverty among large U.S. cities — experienced child poverty rates double the average rate of cities with similar population levels. It also revealed that nearly 30 percent of children in Albany are living in poverty.

In New York City, the child poverty rate is 23 percent. Across New York, the counties with the highest rates of child poverty are Bronx, Kings, Broome and Chautauqua counties.

Across New York, nearly one in five children live in poverty, placing the state in the top 10 highest levels of child poverty in the country, with a rate 2.5 percent higher than the national average. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said that the number is “staggering.”
